Purity of sailing is the question that many a skipper owner and enthusiastic sailor believe to be the only ethos, and questions the move of innovation of the sport. Oh yes we are bound by the will of the elements which is not in the hands of any but nature itself. We are therefore a mere extension of the will to make use of this undeniable free gift wind, water and everything ells called elements that is thrown at us whilst moving in our priced possession to a destination that we set out to reach with shear difficulty if nature decides to be against it. If this was the real ethos of our existence we would still be riding the trusted horse as our only transport or sail in a vessel that resembles the papyrus vessels used by the ancient Egyptians.
Alas we have evolved and for the sake of our hobby we need to understand that innovation has always been the backbone of man’s evolution in any field. I have had firsthand experience with this in sailing but that part I will write about another time. Sailing is probably one of the only sports that demands to have respect for the element whilst trying to make good use of its power. Maybe climbing a mountain, but than a high one will give you the same satisfaction when element plays the greatest role in achieving the goal that you have set to do. Our rules in many ways are not written in a rule book but experiences are shared to allow a fellow sailor understand and see what rule nature has for us.
So than what sense or meaning does it really have to place ourselves wanting to move faster so that traveling time is reduced or new destinations come closer and are reachable? It is our destiny as sailors to explore and conquer and to want to do what we desire to have faster yachts with greater extremes of powerful design in hull shapes and rigging. This however requires more crew that has a level of knowledge and good experience and thus the equation can be drawn that a faster car needs all the safety features equal to a yacht requiring safety feature and skippers and crew that know what they are doing. Considering that the complexity of a yacht having to deal with constant changing elements should make us realize that tried and tested engineering equipment is available to substitute tasks in order to make the experience greater within the confines of once crew. Careful consideration should be taken that in all probability, a question of family versus a complement of crew, may in most cased favor the family. If that is the case than why should we not reduce the dependability of crew and have a yacht that sails well and have tried and tested innovative equipment on board that will do the heavy work and hydraulics should not be ignored.
As mentioned before a modern airplane at whatever speed cannot fly without the aid of this type of equipment. How many pumps and hydraulic cylinders there are on a plane I do not know but if a yacht has 8 which is felt to be extreme. My guess is that by multiplication of 4 or more a plane stays in the air or is able to land. Eight hydraulic rams you may ask, for what and where, but it is the innovation that brings this tried and tested equipment on board. A military cruiser has made use of this equipment from the beginning of invention and designed so the influence of element has not had a grip on its application. In the case of our TAG 60 we have used CatEvolution as our mission to make the yacht sail-ability with a minimal of crew. A yacht that has taken into account, Family, Privacy, Enjoyment, Sail-ability and Adventure.
So than where have we designed this useful equipment to make sailing a TAG 60 pleasurable? In its design we have taken into account the safety aspect needed to have full control and can sail under different conditions with the knowledge that by programming you can change its sail-ability. Oh yes similar as driving a well design car that have different modes such as “Town driving, Open road, Sport or Race” and will change traction and suspension when conditions of the road change These settings are also on Tag 60 yacht in the form of percentages of the righting moment. Such as Night sailing 60%, Day sailing 80% getting to destinations fast or 100% for Racing or on a calm day where you still want to make progress. The Tag 60 has many measuring devices that work in conjunction with the hydraulic rams such as an inclination meter and load cells. These measure tensions, pressure and the righting moment of the yacht and when they indicate extremes they will automatically release the pressure in Hydraulic rams to ease of the rig and bring sailing to a programmed acceptable level. When the yacht is ready to make use of the wind conditions again it will sheet in the main sail and the yacht springs back into action. These adjustments are made gradually and finite so that the yacht is a stable vessel giving enjoyment to the owner and family.
Where are Hydraulic rams used? The self tacking Jib or Blade is controlled by a ram and it sheets are fed through the yacht under the saloon floor to the control station to avoid any line clutter. The mainsail has various rams for control. The Mainsail traveler ram controls the main sheet car on the track that is mounted on the back of the coach roof and thus controlling the feed in and out of the boom whilst a ram in the Park Avenue boom controls the main sail sheet. In the boom is a second ram that controls the mainsail Outhaul in order to adjust the form of the sail to its optimum. The booms level is controlled by a hydraulic Vang to provide adjustment of the main sail. The Tag 60 has a full Carbon Mast which can be rotated by a hydraulic ram to adjust maximum angle of the sail Luff in relation to the mast. This makes for a powerful rig by adjusting all the rams to its correct position the yacht will perform to its expectation and we can confidentially say it is accelerating to feel the movement and sail faster than the true wind. This Yacht has the ability in light air to sail well en enjoy it without having to use any form of propulsion than the wind only. As the Tag 60 was designs to be a true sailing yacht it has 2x 2.5 meter dagger boards that are controlled by hydraulic rams and no manpower is need to place them at the level you feel is suitable for the sailing experience you desire.
With these specially engineered rams in place, sailing experience changes drastically and if than the rigging layout is designed to have no line clutter on board but just two places where the lines come out of its sheave box at the steering stations into jammers for ease of handling it has become the optimum of sailing. Knowing that everything is working but hidden from view and no clutter, it becomes a therapeutically environment where family and friends can relax on the way to a destination at an average speed of 250 NM per day. Now let’s be frank by the fact that our lives are inevitably hectic, it should be our desire therefore to want to sail totally relaxed in the surrounding of only the family. If however you venture into race territory and only some of the family are eager to get involved you can do so with a program change. A well designed yacht should be able to sail in conditions that are adventures but with the knowledge that you have control over the rig and a true world cruiser is the TAG 60 designed for this purpose. It is not my convincing that CatEvolution works but the true design innovation that we have seen over the last 10 years that makes this sport so exciting and worthwhile doing
